Inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979 - Tackle-guard Ron Mix excelled as an offensive tackle with the San Diego Chargers in the American Football League, but he always jokingly complained about the relatively little attention interior lineman received. While this lack of identity may be a reality for many offensive linemen, the finely tuned Mix combined determination and ability to rise above the line-of -scrimmage oblivion throughout his 10 years with the Chargers. A powerful blocker who depended on superior technique-during his AFL career he was assessed only 2 holding penalties-Ron was nicknamed "The Intellectual Assassin." Out of uniform, he was articulate, intelligent, and modest. On the field he eliminated defenders. He was an All-AFL selection eight times as a tackle and once as a guard, played in eight AFL-All Star games, and was unanimously chosen for the AFL's all-time team in 1969. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the Mix story is that he played football at all. In high school, he really wanted to play baseball and was fairly successful in track, but somehow ended up playing football, a sport he disliked. Ron did well enough to earn a scholarship to USC where he gained almost 100 pounds and became an efficient tackle. When he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960, he intended to play long enough to "get a start in life, just a year or two." But as he started to improve as a player, he began to enjoy football more. He decided to stick around. Tackle-guard, 6-4, 250 University of Southern California -USC ,Professionally Mix played for the 1960 Los Angeles Chargers, 1961-69 San Diego, and 1971 Oakland Raiders. |
