BIG LEAGUE OUTFITTERS philosophy is to provide a quality float tube fly fishing experience while furnishing all the equipment.
FLOAT TUBE FISHING Fly fishing from a float tube is something you must experience if you haven' t done it before. We've specialized in this area to give fishermen an alternative to the ordinary fishing trip. We're able to access some of the areas pristine smaller waters. Without noisy motors to spook the fish, we'll cruise in the comfort of your favorite lounge chair amongst the feeding fish. You might gain a whole new perspective on fishing.
ABOUT YOUR GUIDE Kurt Stillwell is a native Californian who in '96 concluded a thirteen year professional baseball career. Kurt's baseball experiences and his passion for fishing provide him with a unique background that he gladly shares with others.
FISHING TECHNIQUES We exclusively use fly fishing methods from our float tubes. This includes predominately streamer and nymphing however some dry fly fishing is done when appropriate. NO FLY FISHING OR FLOAT TUBE EXPERIENCE NECESSARY Rookies are welcome! Kurt's ultimate goal is to turn others on to this great sport of fly fishing from a float tube. Experienced fly fishers and tubers will appreciate the quality of the fish found in this area. WHERE WILL WE FISH? We'll fish where they're biting! The region is expansive and the possibilities are numerous, for that reason BIG LEAGUE OUTFITTERS will be in tune with the fish activity and hatches in the area. Lake Almanor and road trips to Butt Valley, Eagle, McCoy, Long, Crater and Echo Lakes will be possibilities depending on the bite. Your preference will be considered but not always guaranteed. NOTE: These are all stillwater fisheries.
WHAT WILL WE CATCH? Catching anything on a fly rod from a float tube is a thrill! We will be targeting the Trout (Rainbow, Brown &Brook), King Salmon and Smallmouth Bass that inhabit the waters listed above. Fish over 20" are a real possibility. CATCH AND RELEASE POLICY While fishing with BIG LEAGUE OUTFITTERS the release of all fish caught is required. This policy will enhance the fishing prospects for the future and will allow the standard of high quality fish to be maintained. Trophies can and will be caught! Special efforts can be made to photograph and measure the fish for Fiberglass Replica candidates.
WHAT THE HEX? Lake Almanor is home to the giant Hexagenia Limbata mayfly that shows itself at twilight in midsummer. We'll book separate evening trips starting in late June through July. This can be a great opportunity to catch a large fish on the surface. When the hatch is "on" everything that swims is looking for this large meal.
"LAKE ALMANOR GRAND SLAM" Hit the "Lake Almanor Grand Slam" which involves catching the Rainbow and Brown Trout, King Salmon and Smallmouth Bass. A good Hex hatch can help you claim bragging rights to this prize. This identical "Slam" is possible at Butt Valley Reservoir. If you don't know where Lake Almanor is, you're not alone. It's a well kept secret! Located near the base of Mount Lassen and Lassen National Park, Lake Almanor is a jewel of a lake set at 4,500 feet elevation. A two hour drive northwest from the Reno/Tahoe airport, or a three hour trip northeast from California's Capital city Sacramento, brings you into some of the best fishing grounds California has to offer.
AREA ACCOMMODATIONS AND SERVICES Bed and Breakfast and motel rooms are available in the Chester, Lake Almanor area. Lodges are also a popular choice on several lakefront locations. Campgrounds can also be found throughout the beautifully forested county. Advance notice is suggested due to the influx of summer time visitors. BIG LEAGUE OUTFI'ITERS can furnish a lodging guide upon request. The small town of Chester has plenty of eating establishments but be aware of operating hours, a late evening Hex hatch may leave you hungry. RATES AND RESERVATIONS A Lake Almanor 1/2 day trip is $100 per person (3 persons maximum). A 1/2 day is considered from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.. Evening Hex trips are $75 per person. Road trips are $150 per person (6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). For reservations call 1-800-743-9577. Short notice trips are fine if available. A 50% deposit is required to reserve a date. Upon receipt of deposit a confirmation letter will be sent to you describing the services to be performed as requested by the Department of Fish and Game. Cancellations must be made 10 days prior to reserved date to refund deposits.
