Jerry Sherk Career Highlights - 1976 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Jerry Sherk's first NFL game was also the first Monday Night Football Game ever, Joe Namath and the Jets vs. Cleveland in 1970. Things didn't go well that night for Jerry and he admits he became Howard Cosell's first sacrificial "goat" as the caustic sports announcer berated his play the entire game. That game was the motivation for Jerry to go for greatness, and when it was all over he had not only carved out a 12-year career, but he left as the most honored Cleveland Brown in the decade of the seventies. A defensive tackle, Jerry went to four Pro Bowls, was chosen by his peers as NFL defensive lineman of the year, and was also named NFL's defensive Player of the Year in 1976. Before retirement Jerry was elected to the Cleveland Browns All Time and was the most honored Brown of the 1970's..
Business Activities: President - MENTOR AMERICA I was an All Pro defensive lineman who played 12 years in the NFL. My success took me by surprise, as I knew I wasn't the biggest, strongest, or fastest player on the field. Not having the size or talent of others, the question often came to me: How have I become a successful Pro Athlete? Continuing to play pro ball, I got the feeling that there was some kind of path or system that was helping me to climb higher and higher, but I wasn't exactly sure what it was. After leaving the NFL, it was time to go back to college to learn about something beyond athletics. I had mastered football, but I knew that school would be a difficult challenge for me. My worries about getting through school got me thinking about "the athlete's way to success" that I had used in sports. If the system worked for me in football, I was sure it would work for me in academics also. I set out to create a model that I could use to help me get through school. I found many clues in psychology (the study of the mind) and also in mythology (stories about heroes). After much thought, and after talking to other athletes, I was able to set a model down on paper. I called it The Athlete's Cycle, and I successfully used it to get my masters degree in college. Later, I tested it further by showing it to young people and having them try it out.To date, hundreds of students have utilized it. They tell me that it works and that it's fun to use. The Athlete's Cycle uses the letters "C-H-A-R-G-E" as a way to remember each of the goal setting steps. I encourage you to use The Athlete's Cycle to tap into your own special qualities as you CHARGE and re-CHARGE into your tasks in sports, academics, and other areas.
