Athletic Success Football Career Highlights "Swede" You could say Harland Svare's career began even before this football great led his New York Giants to the 1956, 58 & 59 National Championship Title. Svare was once a burly outside linebacker with the New York Giants. In 1958 he was named to the Giants all-time defensive team, the same year Harland was named All-Pro.His athleticism & notoriety prevalent even in his college years put him up there with the distinguished & accomplished student- athletes at Washington State University. So dedicated to football, Svare's career didn't end when his number was retired. In 1960 he replaced Tom Landry, the developer of the 4-3 defense, as defensive coordinator and starting linebacker for the New York Giants. In 1962, at age 31, he became the youngest Head Coach in the history of the NFL when he took over the position for the Los Angeles Rams. In the late 1960's Svare's career took another turn when he coached under Vice Lombardi as the Washington Redskins Defensive Coordinator. He concluded his career in the early 1970's with the San Diego Chargers where he held the dual title of General Manager and Head Coach.
