Preparing for college: Conditioning for the Young Student Athlete

Athletes today are always looking for the conditioning edge that will give them an advantage over their opponents. At too many times, the high school athlete subscribes to advanced training programs before a base has been set. High school athletes who read of conditioning programs for professional athletes should consider that it may have taken years to develop the physical ability to train in that manner.

Many injuries that we see related to conditioning programs are not due to the exercise itself but to the way in which the exercise is used and the physical ability of the person using it. For example, plyometric or jump training is a training tool often used today to develop explosiveness and speed. Properly used, the Graining can help increase jumping ability and speed. without adequate leg strength, however, the potential for injury is great. For the development of speed, plyometrics, running harnesses, strength shoes, and other expensive running aids are often used.

Without mastering the basic sprinting form, these aids are of little value. Therefore, fundamental conditioning and skill training must be done prior to the start of any advanced training. The following basic guidelines are important for a successful training program:

Receive proper training from a qualified instructor--one with experience working with adolescent athletes.

Never attempt conditioning programs for which you have not received training from a certified instructor.

Always begin your conditioning program by establishing well-balanced muscle strength, flexibility, aerobic fitness, proper nutrition, and skill development.

Ask your physician to help find or approve a conditioning program suited to your age and physical development.

Gain a thorough understanding of the principles of conditioning. Knowing the "how's" and "why's" will give you more control in your program.

Do not use any performance enhancement drugs or supplements. Many do not work, cause physical harm, and are illegal both by law and in competition.

Remember, there is no shortcut to athletic success. However it is as important to train smart as it is to train hard.

By following the training guidelines outlined here you will maximize your training efforts and success.
