Athletes Advisory Board Member

Bob Adams

Retired NFL , Speaker on Drug Prevention and Recovery

Bob Adams was inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame last week in recognition of his 8-year NFL career. Adams played as tight end for such teams as the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons.

Adams, who earned his Masters in Education in the off seasons, became an educator and consultant after his pro ball career, working with programs  in the fields of education, drug abuse prevention and rehabilitation, and criminal reform.

"What athletes do and how they live their lives has a lot of influence on their fans," said Adams. "Athletes who abuse drugs, whether street drugs or steroids take them to overcome physical pain, or stress or as a shortcut to improve performance, but the drugs never really solve the problem. And the minute they go this route they not only set a bad example for the kids, they also forfeit their integrity and self-respect."

Adams sees athletes and parents as among the most important role models for today's youth. He encourages them to make the facts about drugs available to youngsters and is a strong supporter of the "Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life" campaign.

Mr. Adams has also authored a booklet on steroids abuse, Understanding Steroids, in which he analyzes the high physical, emotional, spiritual and economic cost of anabolic steroids on today's athletes.
