Courtney Crockett (Lawndale, CA/Leuzinger) may not be as well known to recruiting fans as some of the other cornerbacks in the class of 2012, but college coaches have certainly taken notice of his talents.

Crockett’s recruitment began picking up in the past few weeks and things hit a tipping point recently, as he reeled in his first verbal scholarship offer, from Fresno State.

“They said they got done watching my highlight tape and they liked the way I played,” Crockett said.  “They told me I could come in and possibly start as a true freshman at cornerback.”

While Fresno State is the first school to step forward with an offer, they aren’t the first school to show interest in Crockett, as Leuzinger Head Coach Reggie Grant said that at least 15 schools, including USC, UCLA, Arizona, California and Colorado State, have been by the school to check in on the 5-10, 180 pound, two-way standout.

“He’s a player,” said Grant, who has seen his share of athletes, having played both at Oregon and for the New York Jets.  “He has the second gear that you can’t teach.  He does everything well and he’s only going to get better.”

Crockett was a huge part of the Leuzinger offense last season and will be again this year, taking handoffs, catching passes, returning kicks and serving as the focal point for a team still dealing with the transfers of around 40 players after the 2009 season, when the program made a head-coaching change.  Most schools are recruiting Crockett as a cornerback, but some schools, such as UCLA, have him pegged as an athlete and would likely use him as a wide receiver.

Grant said he has no reservations about Crockett being able to play either position at a very high level, adding that Crockett is unafraid of competition and will make the most of any opportunity he is afforded.

One look at Crockett’s June schedule backs up that statement.  A hip bruise is currently limiting Crockett during Leuzinger’s spring ball, but he is planning on attending camps at San Jose State, San Diego State, UCLA, two at USC and possibly one at Northern Arizona.

“I’m looking forward to it because I can show what I can do and compete in front of the coaches that are recruiting me,” Crockett said.

“I’m a good cover-corner; I just have to start coming down and tackling a little more,” Crockett said of his abilities on the field.  “I’m good at the jam on the line and I have good ball skills.”

Crockett said he began playing football at an early age, but it was mostly pick-up games in the street or at his elementary or middle schools.  He didn’t put on pads until he began his career as a freshman at Leuzinger.  Now with an offer in hand and coaches planning their second visits to see Crockett in action this spring, it won’t be long until he is donning pads and suiting up at the next level.
